July has lived up to its reputation as per usual up on the North coast with fantastic fishing. The chinook closure has been in effect for the first half of the month but that did not dampen any spirits. There was plenty of catch and release for the chinook while we targeted the cohos. With these measures in place, they will have a fighting chance to get back to their native streams to spawn and improve their numbers.
Coho fishing has been nothing short of spectacular. Once the schools have been found, they have been eager to bite the gear. Limits of these beauties along with a few halibut, most are taking home a great box of fish.
July 18th marked the day that chinooks opened back up for retention. One a day and two in possession are the limits set until the early portion of August.
There has been a solid number of chinooks available, and most guests have been able to retain a couple.

Halibut report
The halibut fishing has been fantastic this month with not one area better than the next.
The steady influx of pink salmon swimming by allows the halibut to really spread out and anticipate the opportunity at a free meal.
Massive balls of herring that cruise by also provide ample food for bottom fish of all varieties.
At the lodge, after a busy day on the water, our guests are welcome to enjoy the hot tub or sauna that is available. It is a perfect way to unwind and relax before appetizers and dinner are plated.
Our head chef Sage takes her passion for cooking and exemplifies it in each meal that is served. In a long-standing tradition at EPL, fish and chips are served on departure day. Guests have commented that this is the perfect meal to end their trip and they look forward to it year after year.

Wildlife Alert…
We have been fortunate to encounter loads of humpback whales as of late. These massive creatures are nonstop hunting bait fish to feed on. The process the whales use to stun or confuse massive quantities of bait fish is called bubble feeding and it creates a magical show for everyone to witness.
They will be around for the rest of the season consuming as much fish as they can while the opportunity is present.
August is right around the corner and fishing will continue to be great. The cohos are putting on weight everyday and the ocean is alive with activity. If you happen to be coming up to the lodge, we cannot wait to see you and get to share what this beautiful area has to offer. If you are thinking about exploring the area, please reach out and let us help make your trip as seamless as possible.
Tight lines,
Jonathan Beaty
