Fish Master Insights: Doug’s 27 Years of Wisdom and Top 5 Tips

Behind every memorable fishing day at Eagle Pointe is our dedicated Fish Master Doug, who has been part of the team for 14 years. His knowledge and connection to the waters around the lodge help guests make the most of every outing.
Here are Doug’s top 5 tips to increase your odds for a successful catch:

  1. Understanding the tides and how they affect fish behavior. Certain spots fish better on certain tides, especially for halibut and Chinook. Having a knowledge of a “local” guide helps to be in the right place at the right time.
  2. Use the right bait. If the fish seem uninterested, switch it up. For salmon, factors like bait size and trolling speed can make a big difference. When targeting halibut, focus on scent and creating strong scent trails—they’re essential for success.
  3. Stay patient. Hooking up often comes in flurries. Both salmon and halibut are migratory gamefish. On some days changing locations might be the right move if fishing is slow. On other days the “stick and stay, make it pay” mantra may be the winning strategy.
  4. Trust your guide. The guide wants to catch fish as much as you do. Believe me, any guide’s day is easier if the boat has fish onboard.
  5. Practice sustainable fishing to preserve the fishery for future seasons. Be kind to the fish you release and grateful for the ones you harvest.

On a final note, don’t forget to sit back and take in all the beauty the North Coast has to offer.
