Planning & Travel

What should I pack?

Bring layered clothing suitable for coastal conditions, including a light jacket or hoodie, sweatpants, swimsuit, sunglasses and your personal toiletries.

We provide premium rain gear, waterproof rubber boots, and complimentary sunscreen and bug repellent on all boats.

What luggage restrictions should I be aware of?

Due to helicopter weight and space limitations, each guest is limited to 30 lbs, including carry-on items.

Please pack in a soft-sided duffel bag or sports bag, as hard-shell and oversized suitcases cannot be accommodated.

If you expect to exceed 30 lbs, contact us in advance so we can review options with you.

What time should I arrive at Prince Rupert Airport on arrival day?

Plan to arrive at Prince Rupert Airport at 1:30 p.m. on arrival day.

Our private helicopter departs for the lodge at 2:00 p.m., and the flight is approximately 20 minutes.

How does the helicopter transfer work?

Your group’s arrival and departure to and from the lodge are scheduled around a private helicopter transfer between Prince Rupert Airport and the lodge.

On arrival day, if you are flying by commercial flight or driving into Prince Rupert, you’ll take the Digby Island Ferry to the airport in time for the 2:00 p.m. helicopter departure. If you are driving, you are welcome to leave your vehicle at Inland Air for the duration of your stay.

On departure day, the helicopter departs the lodge for the Prince Rupert Airport at 2:30 p.m., following lunch.

What happens if my travel plans change or weather delays the helicopter?

Helicopter transfers are fully weather dependent, and flight decisions are made with safety as the top priority. If conditions prevent a flight, our team works directly with the pilots to safely transfer you to or from Prince Rupert, using alternate transportation when needed.

Helicopter transfers operate on a set schedule for each private group. If you need different arrival or departure times, alternate transportation can be arranged at your own expense. We are happy to share contact details and help with coordination.

Is food available on arrival and departure days?

Yes. On arrival day, you’ll be welcomed with soup and fresh-baked bread, along with baked goods, fruit, and snacks to take on the water.

On departure day, you’ll enjoy our beloved fish and chips before you leave the lodge.

What is the dress code for dinner?

There is no formal dress code. Casual, comfortable attire is appropriate.

Does the lodge have Wi-Fi and internet?

Fishing Experience

Do we fish in Alaskan waters?

No. All guided fishing takes place exclusively in Canadian waters.

We are not licensed to guide in U.S. waters, so fishing in Alaska is not offered.

Our experienced guides fish a wide range of nearby Canadian grounds, choosing locations each day based on conditions and targeted species.

Can beginners or non-fishing guests enjoy the experience?

Absolutely. You don’t need any prior fishing experience.

Our knowledgeable guides tailor instruction to all skill levels, and the pace of each day can be adjusted to suit your group.

Time on the water also offers wildlife viewing, coastal scenery, and the shared experience of exploring this remote coastal environment together.

What does a typical fishing day look like?

Full fishing days include up to ten hours on the water.

During Chinook season, breakfast is usually at 6:00 a.m., with boats departing around 7:00 a.m. and returning around 5:00 p.m.

As Coho arrive in greater numbers from mid-July, breakfast and departure times shift a little later.

You’ll enjoy up to four hours of fishing on both arrival and departure days.

Do I need to bring a fishing licence?

No. All required fishing licences are included and prepared for you as part of your stay.

How many guests are on each boat?

Each 27′ Skagit Orca accommodates two guests and one guide, offering an exceptional 1:2 guide to guest ratio for personalized attention and a relaxed experience on the water.

I am prone to motion sickness. What should I plan for?

Our 27′ Skagit Orca boats are designed for stability and comfort.

Motion-sickness medications and wrist bands are available on each boat, however if you are sensitive to motion, we recommend bringing the remedy that works best for you.

What happens in rough weather?

If conditions change, guides move to more protected fishing areas to keep you comfortable on the water.

Our location offers extensive sheltered grounds, and each 27′ Skagit Orca has a heated cabin and onboard washroom for added comfort throughout the day.

What equipment does the lodge provide?

We provide premium rods, reels, and tackle suited to each species.

We do not provide fly rods or flies, however you are welcome to bring an 8–10 weight fly rod, 4″–6″ saltwater bucktails, and a good saltwater fly reel if you wish to troll with fly gear.

Do you offer fly fishing?

When is the best time to catch a large Chinook?

Chinook, often called spring or king salmon, begin arriving in May.

June and the first half of July are usually the strongest months for larger fish.

As with all wild fisheries, both size and numbers vary with run strength and conditions each season.

Your Catch

What happens to my fish after the trip?

All fish are professionally processed to your preferred portion size, vacuum-sealed, and flash-frozen before departure.

Your catch is boxed and prepared for travel home.

Most guests check their fish as airline baggage; because baggage policies vary, we recommend confirming limits with your carrier in advance.

What if I am unable to take my fish home with me?

If you’re not traveling home right away, or if your airline cannot accommodate your fish, we can arrange transfer to St. Jean’s Cannery on your behalf. The lodge covers the cost of sending your fish to the cannery.

The cannery will process and ship your fish directly to your home at your expense. Typical turnaround is 10–12 weeks.

What is the size of the boxes of fish?

Fish boxes are approximately 14″ wide × 10″ high × 32″ long and are approved for airline checked baggage, making it easy to travel home with your catch.

A full box typically weighs up to 50 lbs per guest.
